What is Scopus?
Scopus is currently the most popular and largest abstract and bibliographic database of peer-reviewed literature: scientific journals, books, conference proceedings, trade publications, book series, scientific web pages, and patient records.
Scopus was launched in 2004 and includes articles published from 1966 onwards. Apart from Scopus, other popular journal indexing databases are Google Scholar, Web of Science, NIH/NLM, PubMed, DOAJ.
How many journals are indexed in Scopus?
As of May 2022, there are 26,228 active journals in the Scopus database, and 23,233 journals publish articles in English. Of the total number of active journals, 5,239 journals are open access journals. 536 of those journals are added only in May 2022.
Every year, approximately 3,500 new titles are suggested for inclusion in Scopus, of which usually 33% meet the technical criteria and are accepted for indexing.

Scopus distinguishes between authors with the same name by giving each author a separate Scopus Author ID and grouping together all the documents written by that author.

Scopus Citation Index is a bibliographic database produced by Scopus that provides citation links between documents, allowing the user to easily establish which later documents cite which earlier documents.

Minimum criteria for a journal to be indexed in Scopus Citation Index
These are the minimum criteria for the selection of journals in the Scopus Citation Index
- Consist of peer-reviewed content and have a publicly available description of the peer review process
- Be published on a regular basis and have an International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) as registered with the ISSN International Centre
- Have content that is relevant for and readable by an international audience, meaning: have English language abstracts and titles
- Have publicly available publication ethics and publication malpractice statement
